Will Your Insurance Pay Out If Your Locks Don't Meet the Standard?

The short answer: maybe not. Many home insurance claims are reduced or rejected because the locks did not meet the policy requirements. Here is how to check yours.

Will Your Insurance Pay Out? How Lock Standards Affect Claims

This is the blog post I wish every homeowner in Coventry would read before they need it. Because finding out your locks do not meet your insurance requirements **after** a burglary is one of the worst experiences I see as a locksmith โ€” and it happens far more often than it should.

I am Ross, a local locksmith covering Coventry and the surrounding areas. I fit insurance-compliant locks every week, and I regularly help people upgrade after they have had a nasty surprise from their insurer. Let me explain how lock standards and insurance claims actually work in practice.

---

What Your Insurance Policy Actually Says

Almost every home insurance policy in the UK includes security requirements. The exact wording varies, but here is a typical example from a major UK insurer:

> *"All external doors must be secured with a mortice deadlock conforming to BS3621, or a multi-point locking system with a key-operated cylinder lock."*

Some policies are more specific:

> *"Final exit doors fitted with a key-operated mortice deadlock to BS3621 with matching boxed striking plate, or a multi-point locking system."*

And some are frustratingly vague:

> *"Doors must be fitted with locks of a standard acceptable to us."*

The key phrase in all of these is the standard โ€” usually **BS3621** for mortice deadlocks on wooden doors. For uPVC and composite doors, many insurers now accept multi-point locking systems, but some additionally require the cylinder to meet **TS007 3-star** or be **Sold Secure Diamond** rated.

What Happens If Your Locks Do Not Comply

This is where it gets real. If you make a burglary claim and your locks do not meet the standards specified in your policy, your insurer has several options:

1. Reject the Claim Entirely

This is the nuclear option, and while it is less common than it used to be, it does happen. If your policy clearly states that locks must meet BS3621 and your front door has a 3-lever mortice lock (which does not meet any standard), the insurer can refuse to pay out.

2. Reduce the Payout (Contribution Clause)

This is the more common outcome. The insurer argues that if you had fitted compliant locks, the burglary might not have occurred or would have been more difficult. They reduce the payout by a percentage โ€” typically **30-50%**.

On a claim of ยฃ10,000 for stolen items, a 40% reduction means you receive ยฃ6,000. That ยฃ4,000 difference would have paid for every lock in your house to be upgraded to BS3621 several times over.

3. Pay the Claim with a Warning

Some insurers, particularly for first-time claims, will pay out but require you to upgrade your locks within a specified timeframe (usually 28-30 days) as a condition of continuing your cover.

4. Pay in Full

If the burglary method would not have been prevented by compliant locks โ€” for example, if the burglar entered through a smashed rear window โ€” the lock standard may be irrelevant and the claim is paid in full regardless.

The uPVC Door Grey Area

Here is where things get genuinely confusing, and where I spend a lot of time advising Coventry homeowners.

Most homes built or renovated in the last 20-30 years have **uPVC or composite front doors**. These doors typically have a **multi-point locking system** operated by a euro cylinder. They do **not** have a traditional BS3621 mortice deadlock โ€” and they are not designed to accept one.

So what does your insurance require?

The Good News

Most major UK insurers now accept multi-point locking systems on uPVC and composite doors as meeting their security requirements. The key is the **euro cylinder** that operates the system.

The Catch

Many insurers now require the euro cylinder to meet a specific standard:

  • **TS007 3-star** โ€” the most commonly referenced cylinder standard
  • **Sold Secure Diamond** (SS312) โ€” a more rigorous test
  • **Secured by Design (SBD)** โ€” a police-backed accreditation
  • If your uPVC door has a **standard euro cylinder** โ€” the basic brass-coloured cylinder that came with the door when it was installed โ€” it almost certainly does **not** meet any of these standards. Standard cylinders can be snapped in under 30 seconds, and insurers increasingly know this.

    What You Need

An anti-snap euro cylinder that meets TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond. I fit these from ยฃ69 across Coventry โ€” it is a 10-minute job with no damage to your door. See our [lock upgrade service](/services/lock-upgrade) for details.

    Real Examples from Coventry

I am not going to name clients or insurers, but here are real situations I have dealt with:

Example 1: Earlsdon terrace, wooden front door

The homeowner had a 3-lever mortice lock (not BS3621). After a burglary, the insurer reduced the payout by 40%. The claim was for ยฃ8,500 of stolen items โ€” the homeowner received ยฃ5,100. A BS3621 lock would have cost ยฃ79 to fit.

Example 2: Tile Hill semi, uPVC front door

Standard euro cylinder snapped by burglars. The insurer paid the claim in full but required the cylinder to be upgraded to TS007 3-star within 30 days as a condition of continuing cover. The homeowner called me the next day โ€” ยฃ69 for an anti-snap cylinder.

Example 3: Canley student house (HMO)

Break-in through a weak rear door. The landlord's insurance policy required BS3621 on all final exit doors. The rear door had no deadlock at all. The insurer contributed 50% of the claim only. The landlord then had me fit BS3621 locks on all doors โ€” total cost was less than what the insurer deducted.

How to Check Your Current Situation

Here is a step-by-step process to find out whether you are covered:

Step 1: Find Your Policy Documents

Look for the section called **"Security Requirements"**, **"Home Security"**, **"General Conditions"**, or **"Claims Conditions"**. This is where the lock requirements will be listed.

Step 2: Read the Lock Requirements

Note exactly which standards are required. Common ones:

  • BS3621 (mortice deadlocks)
  • TS007 (euro cylinders โ€” look for 1-star, 2-star, or 3-star)
  • SS312 / Sold Secure Diamond (euro cylinders)
  • Secured by Design / SBD
  • Step 3: Check Your Locks

For mortice deadlocks: look for the **BSI Kitemark** on the faceplate (edge of the door). For euro cylinders: this is harder โ€” the standard is rarely stamped on the cylinder itself. Check the original packaging, receipt, or installation certificate. Or call a locksmith.

    Step 4: Address Any Gaps

If your locks do not meet the required standard, upgrade them. It is almost always cheaper than you think. For full pricing, see our [prices page](/prices).

    Getting Your Locks Compliant

Here is what compliance typically costs:

    Lock TypeStandardTypical Cost (Fitted)

    |---|---|---|

    5-lever mortice deadlockBS3621From ยฃ79
    Anti-snap euro cylinderTS007 1-starFrom ยฃ59
    Anti-snap euro cylinderTS007 3-star (with handle)From ยฃ89
    Premium anti-snap cylinder (Ultion/ABS)Sold Secure DiamondFrom ยฃ109

For most Coventry homes with a uPVC front door and back door, getting fully compliant costs **ยฃ120-180 total**. Compare that to a 40% reduction on a burglary claim and the maths is obvious.

    My Honest Advice

After fitting locks across Coventry for years, here is what I tell every customer:

  • **Read your policy** โ€” not the summary, the actual policy document. Find the security requirements section
  • **Check your locks match** โ€” or call me and I will do it for free
  • **Upgrade if needed** โ€” the cost is trivial compared to the risk of a reduced or rejected claim
  • **Keep proof** โ€” when I fit a new lock, I give you a receipt showing the lock type, standard it meets, and date of installation. Keep this with your insurance documents
  • **Tell your insurer** โ€” let them know you have upgraded. Some insurers offer lower premiums for homes with higher-security locks
  • Do not wait until after a burglary to find out your locks are not compliant. A 10-minute, ยฃ79 lock upgrade could save you thousands on a claim. Call me on 07735 336175 or visit our [lock upgrade page](/services/lock-upgrade) to get started.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can my insurance refuse to pay out because of my locks?

Yes. If your policy specifies a lock standard (usually BS3621 for mortice deadlocks or TS007 for euro cylinders) and your locks do not meet that standard, the insurer can reduce or refuse your claim. The most common outcome is a reduction of 30-50% rather than outright refusal, but either way it can cost you thousands of pounds. Getting compliant locks fitted typically costs under ยฃ100 per door.

My uPVC door does not have a BS3621 lock โ€” am I uninsured?

Not necessarily. uPVC and composite doors use multi-point locking systems with euro cylinders, not traditional mortice deadlocks. Most insurers accept these as meeting their requirements, but many now require the euro cylinder to meet TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond standard. The standard cylinder that came with your door almost certainly does not meet these standards. I can upgrade your cylinder to a compliant anti-snap version from ยฃ69 fitted โ€” call 07735 336175.

How do I know if my lock meets BS3621?

For a mortice deadlock (the type with a large key that sits inside the edge of a wooden door), look at the faceplate โ€” the metal strip on the edge of the door. A genuine BS3621 lock will have the BSI Kitemark stamped into the metal along with the standard number BS3621. If there is no Kitemark, the lock has not been independently certified. For euro cylinders, the standard is rarely stamped on the lock itself โ€” check the original packaging or call me for a free check.

What is the cheapest way to make my home insurance-compliant?

For a uPVC or composite door, an anti-snap euro cylinder fitted from ยฃ59 (TS007 1-star) or ยฃ69 (TS007 3-star) is usually all you need. For a wooden door, a BS3621 5-lever mortice deadlock fitted from ยฃ79. Most Coventry homes need just the front and back doors done, so total cost is typically ยฃ120-180. That is less than the excess on most insurance policies, and far less than a 40% reduction on a claim worth thousands.
